Spinaloga – Agios Nikolaos City

Duration ------

11hours

Our first destination is the island of Spinalonga where we can go by boat for 10-15 minutes from the ports of Elounda or Plaka which are 30 minute away from the city of Agios Nikolaos. An island where lepers from Crete and the rest of Greece had been kept in isolation from 1903 until 1957. The island forms a natural defense point for Elounda harbor, and in 1579 the Venetians built a mighty fortress here on the ruins of an ancient acropolis. Walking around the island takes about an hour, but the serenity of the place and the remnants of its recent history will certainly tempt you into spending much longer. Next destination is Agios Nikolaos city, seafront city with a lot of history. The landmark of the city is the small lake, known as “Voulismeni” that is located in the center of the city, at the foot of the cliffs. According to the mythology, the goddess Athena used to take her bath in this lake. The sea in Agios Nikolaos is superb and the surrounding area of the city is noted for its sandy beaches and beautiful bays.
